Landmark Western starring Gary Cooper as a small-town marshal whose wedding day is ruined when news comes through that a murderous gang will be arriving on the midday train. As the minutes tick by, the timorous townsfolk head for the hills, leaving Coop a man alone. Even his girl Grace Kelly has doubts about standing by her man (hence the Oscar-winning song 'Do Not Forsake Me, Oh My Darling'). Director Fred Zinnemann keeps trigger fingers twitching by running the clock down in real time, while chief villain Lee Van Cleef never says a word. Terrific.
